Disastrous destruction after serious earthquake
On 12 January 2010 a serious earthquake struck Haiti. 300,000 people lost their lives, hundreds of thousands were injured and 1.5 million people were made homeless. The earthquake not only left great devastation behind it, but also brought the country's infrastructure to a complete standstill.
Despite the positive developments during the last few years, structural weaknesses and insufficient infrastructure continue to hinder work in the project region. The political instability in particular also makes the current situation more difficult. Haiti was already the poorest country in the western hemisphere before the earthquake and remains so today.
The food situation is still critical in many regions. Repeated tropical storms such as Hurricane Sandy in 2012 destroy agricultural land.
