Why winterisation is important

Cold, snow and darkness: for many people, winter is a bitter struggle for survival.

People in refugee camps are particularly vulnerable to the freezing temperatures. They have no warm clothing, no firewood, no blankets. Often, nothing more than a thin tent wall separates them from the cold. People in disaster or war zones are also in urgent need of help, as houses and infrastructure are often destroyed.

As part of our winterisation, we provide affected families with warmth and help them get through the cold season. Help repairs damaged houses, distributes heating materials and enables the purchase of blankets, warm clothing and food.

Ukraine: The fourth winter of war

In February 2022, the war in Ukraine escalated. Since then, countless homes have been damaged or destroyed in rocket attacks. Infrastructure has also suffered extensive damage in many places. Many people are forced to live in damaged homes, often without heating, running water or electricity.

Help is on the ground, helping affected families to winterise their homes. For example, we repair destroyed windows and heating systems. We also distribute heating materials so that people can have a warm home.

Afghanistan: Hunger and freezing cold

In Afghanistan, winter exacerbates the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in the country. More than half of the population is dependent on humanitarian aid. Many families live in dilapidated houses and cannot even afford food.

In addition, there is a lack of warm clothing, blankets, wood and coal for heating. The situation is particularly dangerous for women and children, as they are often left to fend for themselves.

Help provides winter relief: we provide families with cash to purchase blankets, winter clothing, wood-burning stoves and enough firewood to get through the winter. Further winter aid is urgently needed to give women and girls in particular a chance.

Warm accommodation for Palestinian families

Since the escalation of the Middle East conflict in October 2023, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated dramatically. An estimated 105,000 people have been able to flee to Egypt. However, they are not officially recognised as refugees there and therefore have no access to basic services.

Many of them are dependent on the support of humanitarian aid organisations to obtain shelter, food and other vital assistance. Among other things, Help provides food aid and rent subsidies so that affected families have a warm home in winter.

Help now and give warmth

In winter, help is more important than ever. Together, we can provide shelter and warmth to families in need during the cold season. Even a few Euros can mean a warm blanket or a sturdy pair of shoes.
