Following two severe earthquakes in Venezuela, countless families have lost everything.

Together with local organisations, we are providing emergency aid to the earthquake survivors. We provide affected families with food, relief supplies and psychosocial support.

The images reaching us from Venezuela are harrowing: countless buildings have collapsed like houses of cards, whilst rescue workers are fighting their way through mountains of rubble metres high in search of those buried beneath. By 10 August 2026, the Venezuelan authorities had confirmed 6,301 fatalities, with nearly 61,000 more injured. Still, tens of thousands of people are still missing, but there is no longer any hope of finding survivors amongst the rubble.

The earthquake struck densely populated regions in the north of the country, including the capital, Caracas. Over two million people live in the affected region. Nearly 18,000 people have lost their homes and are now in urgent need of help.

Your support makes a difference

Together with local partners, we are providing emergency aid in the particularly hard-hit towns of El Junquito and Pericoco in the state of La Guaira. There, we are distributing food, hygiene kits and tool kits so that families can clear away the rubble and have the essentials they need. We are also providing psychosocial support for children and adults.

We urgently appeal for donations for those affected:

Erdbeben Venezuela: Amalia und ihre Kinder erhalten Unterstützung von Help

When the earth shook in Venezuela, Amalia and her sons were at the dentist’s. “I was so scared that I grabbed my children and ran out of there. I hugged them and asked God to protect us all,” she tells Help. She had never experienced an earthquake before.

For the next few hours, Amalia and her sons were filled with worry for the rest of their family. “We had no mobile signal and the road was blocked. We tried to ring them. That day dragged on endlessly.” Amalia and her family were lucky and got off lightly, but the fear remained.

We stayed awake the whole night. At the slightest sound, I felt as though the whole earth was shaking. My youngest son didn’t say a word that night. We were all absolutely terrified.

Earthquake worsens crisis in Venezuela

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake, measuring a 7.2 magnitude, occurred at a depth of 20.3 kilometres, whilst the second, measuring 7.5, occurred at a depth of just 10 kilometres. Due to the shallow depth, the destruction is extensive. This is the strongest earthquake to hit Venezuela in over 125 years. The Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency shortly after the disaster.

Venezuela has been in the grip of a severe economic and political crisis for years. A large proportion of the population is affected by poverty; according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 7.9 million people were already dependent on humanitarian aid before the earthquake. The earthquake disaster has now left countless families homeless and is exacerbating their plight.

Whilst the earthquake and its serious consequences are fading from the headlines, the plight here remains dire. Many people, particularly children, are traumatised. Furthermore, there is still a shortage of clean drinking water, food and hygiene products.
