The ongoing war in Sudan has forcibly displaced several million people from their homes. Around one million of them are seeking refuge in Chad, a country itself plagued by conflict and hardship. War in Sudan: 14 million people displaced
Sudan has been plagued by crises and conflicts for decades. In mid-April 2023, heavy fighting broke out there, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of people.
The humanitarian situation is catastrophic: around 34 million people in Sudan are dependent on aid, as they lack adequate access to food, drinking water and sanitation facilities. Women and girls in particular are at risk and face the threat of gender-based violence.
Over 14 million people have been displaced from their homes since the fighting began. In Chad alone, over a million people from Sudan are seeking refuge. However, the host regions in the east of the country are unable to cope with the needs of the refugees: in this already arid country, access to drinking water is very limited and the humanitarian situation is dire. Violent conflicts and the consequences of climate change have been plaguing the country, and an economic crisis has also been ongoing since 2015.
Emergency relief for refugees from Sudan
Help has been working in Chad since 2005, supporting the population in coping with humanitarian crises.
We are currently working to improve living conditions in Ouaddai, a province in the east of the country. We support both nearly 40,000 refugees from Sudan and the host communities in Chad.
How Help supports refugees from Sudan
- Food: We provide families with food parcels.
- Relief supplies: Help distributes household items such as cooking utensils to refugee families.
- Water and hygiene: We build and renovate wells and sanitation facilities, and we also raise awareness of safe hygiene practices.
- Accommodation: Help sets up emergency accommodation for refugees from Sudan.
- Protection: We provide information on gender-based violence and on the prevention of sexual abuse.
Naïma from Sudan helps others despite her own hardships
Naïma and her family are from Sudan. The ongoing war and the violence that has accompanied it have forced them to leave their home and seek refuge in Chad. They now live in a refugee camp in Farchana, near the border with Sudan, but even here, conditions are dire. “At the start of Ramadan, the situation was very difficult for us. We were very worried because we had no money to buy food,” says Naïma. Help has provided her with a food parcel containing sugar, salt, rice and oil.
Although they do not have much themselves, Naïma and her family share the relief supplies: “In the camp, some families have received food parcels, whilst others have not yet. We therefore try to share with those who have not received anything, so that everyone can spend Ramadan in better conditions.”
I hope that one day peace and stability will return, so that we can go home.
